Nibsy's Gluten-free
Beryl is a Reading-based coffee trailer bringing on-the-go gluten-free snacks and treats to the streets of Berkshire. Nibsy's named their trailer Beryl and she can be found outside of Reading Station daily, from Tuesday to Saturday. Nibsy's are on a mission to make easy eating available to everyone who needs to find gluten-free food in a hurry. And not only do they offer gluten-free, they cater to a dairy-free diet too.
We made a special journey to visit Nibsy's, and came home with a selection of cakes and savouries, including eggs sandwiches, pizza, and rocky roads. I think we may have got a bit carried away but it also meant there was plenty to share. This turned out to be a good decision, especially when it came to the rocky roads. Melt-in-the-mouth chocolate and marshmallow like you've never tasted before. I am not a rocky road lover but I could be a convert now.
The slice of pizza didn't make it home, as it was heated to eat on the move. Gluten-free pizza is usually a very sad affair but this slice was deep dough with generous toppings. My partner said he could tell the difference from regular pizza but if you miss a good pizza, this is a fabulous substitute. Nibsy's offer vegan options too, otherwise there will be milk in the cheese topping.
Egg sandwiches have made it to the Nibsy's menu and deep-filled is an understatement. Using the M&S Bloomer bread is a real win, and the amount of filling would rival a build-a-bear station. We were able to slice them into little quarters and share.
The sausage rolls were harder to share. Not because they were small but because they were so good. Big meaty fillings, gluten-free pastry, full of flavour and a picture of perfection. I know, it sounds like we fell in love, but I think we honestly did.
It's hard being gluten-free, going out and about for food and not planning ahead. In Europe we found it easier to snack on the go, especially in Bratislava where we found a huge bakery dedicated to gluten-free bakes. So knowing places like Nibsy's exist is a beacon of hope for gluten-free eaters.
Lemon meringue tarts with feather light pastry were a definite favourite, and moist beetroot cake suited those who wanted something less sweet.
On a critical level, the person who can eat anything gluten found a slightly drier edge to the pizza base and pastry, but without a decade of eating gluten-free food they didn't realise just how special this selection was and what we were comparing it to. We have a lemon lover who wanted more bite in the meringue but I prefer subtle flavours rather than overload.
You can't please everyone with everything but a visit to Nibsy's will certainly please anyone who eats gluten-free, and many of those that don't. Plus they make a pretty mean coffee too so if that's all you want, you will still leave happy.
For more information visit Nibsy's. Everything we bought was gluten- and dairy-free (excluding the pizza).
