Flights from the United Kingdom can range between £150 - £300 depending on which airport you choose, and the time of year. Easyjet fly from Gatwick, which suited us the best. Always look for a bargain and plan ahead, early booking will ensure cheaper flights. Leaving it to the last minute can get expensive, especially during the peak holiday seasons. The same applies to hotels. The capital city is Ljubljana; clean and welcoming with modern facilities sitting comfortably alongside the Old Town architecture. Beside the river in Ljubljana you will find numerous older-style buildings, in stark comparison to the high-rise hotels just a short walk away.In Ljubljana you can choose from 5* hotels in the main area of town, or quaint, comfortable rooms along the river in the Old Town.

Ljubljana

From the airport, Uber are available for transport to the city, as well as shuttle bus options. Costs vary but our shuttle bus was 13 € each to ljubljana, and the Uber was 35 € on the way back. Buses run regularly in the city and walking around is easy and safe, even when it gets late. Take the usual precautions and embrace the community spirit. The pavements are wide, and there are many crossing. Just be sure to wait for the lights to change even if the road is clear. Jaywalking is frowned upon and illegal.

The market in the Old Town is well stocked, and offers a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, alongside textiles and trinkets. Burek is a popular snack - a pie made from pastry dough filled with various fillings - and there are quite a few places that offer 24 hour takeaway. Food and drink is mid-range in cost. You can get a coffee for a few euros, or a meal for between 15-20 €. There are cheaper options as well as fine dining to be had, with sliding scales on price. If you are an escape room traveller, Ljubljana has a few to offer in various locations, alongside museums, the castle with a funicular up and down, and boutique shops for clothes and jewellery.

From Ljubljana, you can travel for about an hour to the north-west and visit Bled, where beautiful scenery, a castle and a lake await you. Further north towards the Austrian border is Lake Jasna, and in the same region you will find Lake Bohinj - all worthy of a visit if you book a tour, or rent a car. If you travel to the south-west along the Italian border you will be rewarded with a visit to Lipica, where you will find the largest Lipizzaner horse stud farm in the world.

Wherever you decide to go - remember North Slovenia is nearer the Alps, and is a colder region of the country. Whilst it has beautiful scenery and mountain hikes, plus great ski resorts, if you want a more Mediterranean feel to your holiday, you should head further south. Visiting Ljubljana is a must place to start and you can venture out in all directions as the mood takes you. Slovenia has three main international airports (Ljubljana, Maribor, Portorož) but most flights from the UK will take you to Ljubljana airport.

For an amazing experience, bookmark Slovenia for making memories this year. A greener country with a welcoming community and amazing views.
